Hey there tech fiends, it's that time of the week again. Before we dive into today's focus on maniacal 2017 space themed jams from newcomers Cryogenocide and Obsoletenova, here's the usual weekly reminder that if you're looking for even more sick bands, all prior editions of this series can be perused here.
Cryogenocide – Torn Apart By Two Gravities
Cryogenocide is an interesting group of technical brutal death metal newcomers formed in January of this year who hail from Turku, Finland. The group has a smooth and well-developed sound even now on their recently released debut EP, Torn Apart By Two Gravities.
Overall, the group approaches this style from a Wormed inspired dissonance injected mindset to creating stark and mind-bending spacey technical brutality. While it may consist of only three songs, Torn Apart By Two Gravities overflows with fierce spiraling riffs, massive growls and burps from hell, audible gnarly bass work, and pulverizing drumming work that forms a cold, world collapsing atmosphere, when their performances unite in these songs.
The brutal side of their sound comes across sort of like a mix between early Suffocation and primal Dying Fetus influence in its crunchy skin-flaying riffs and crushing grooves that thunder through all three of the tracks with a fierce bludgeoning quality to it. In addition, there's a fair bit of old-school death metal influence to some of the riffs as well that I quite enjoy and adds a bit more variety to the music. Torn Apart By Two Gravities is a fun and swift release that has me excited for the full-length album the group is currently writing now. Obsoletenova – Malfunction In Sensory Illusion
Hailing from Guangzhou, China, Obsoletenova is another interesting upstart technical brutal death metal band formed in 2015. The group has a varied and volatile approach that deftly combines tech-death with brutal death metal, slam, and some technical brutal death metal bits into a churning randomized machine-like sound all their own. Malfunction In Sensory Illusion comes across like a steroid injected re-combination of Brain Drill and Slaughterbox hanging out with Unfathomable Ruination and Malignancy.
The end result is an over the top, frequently spastic, yet ultimately satisfying exercise in testing the limits of warped sonic extremes. The music here is constantly shifting and swarming from extreme shredding to gnarly slams on a whim and in a plethora of different combinations. There's a ton of sick riffs and swarming leadwork found on every track here, which might be a plus for those among us not as into the brutal slams Obsoletenova employ liberally in their music.
Malfunction In Sensory Illusion in itself is quite the step up from their 2016 Demo release, Oracle. Coupled with the group's recent launch of a sick new single called "Unfathomable", I think Obsoletenova is a band to watch moving forward. Keep an eye out for their new full-length to drop in 2018. Be sure to follow the group over on the Obsoletenova Facebook page too.
