The Siege of Sarajevo lasted from April 5, 1992 to February 29, 1996, as the city was relentlessly attacked by Army of Republika Srpska during the Bosnian War. Nearly 14,000 were killed during the siege, of which just under 5,500 were civilians.
In 1994, then-ex-Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson was playing the city with his band Skunkworks, and things weren't exactly peaceful during the show. That specific performance is now being chronicled in a new documentary called Scream for Me Sarajevo.
Here's what Dickinson had to say about the show, as told in his best-selling autobiography What Does This Button Do?
"We weren’t protected, there was no plan and the bullets were real, but fuck it, we went anyway. The gig was immense, intense and probably the biggest show in the world at that moment for the audience and for us. That the world didn’t really know didn’t matter. It changed the way I viewed life, death and other human beings."
Scream For Me Sarajevo is out in theaters on April 17 and will be screened at the Vue Cinema West End in London on April 11. Get tickets and more information here, and keep an eye out for home theater releases as well.
