Sardinia's an island off the Mediterranean Coast in Italy. It's surrounded by crystal blue waters and covered in numerous ecosystems like mountains, woods, and plains. It makes the first track of Apneica's new EP, entitled "Terra" a rather fitting namesake. The Sardinian quintet blends a ferocious brand of death doom metal with native folk music to create an immersive—yet punishing—composition.
It's an excellent way to kick off a brand new EP called Tra Rocce e Cortecce. A lurching groove and a deep bellow from Ignazio Simula capture a prototypical death doom style, but it's the inclusion of a cane flute and a change in guitar chords that signal a striking atmosphere. It almost places you on the island they call home. This ebb and flow between menacing death doom and ethereal ambiance captures what a lot of classic bands like early Paradise Lost or Katatonia created. However, it's given a sort of indigenous twist.
