Gimme Metal's Top Tracks of the Week

RED DEATH, SMOULDER Among The Top Tracks of the Week

SMOULDER

Every week, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.

Culled from the week’s past shows, these tracks have the Gimme Radio DJs' seal of approval, have the listeners demanding more and the Gimme office buzzing.

RED DEATH – Formidable Darkness

Hadn't heard of this 2017 release until I heard they were joining the Power Trip tour, and was pretty wowed. Driving riffs, post-hardcore/retro-thrash mutually mangled into a pretty pleasing snapshot of what circa-2019 Washington DC's scene has going for it.

SMOULDER – Ilian of Garathorm

No more of this subterranean, self-loathing doom, we like our doom galloping on a horse waving something sharp around in the air. Indeed, Smoulder (the name!) hail from frozen Toronto and conjure up blazing moments of Trouble and Witchfynder General, epic and majestic.

HAZE MAGE – Bong Witch

Grimore Records (who did a great special on Gimme last year) just released this set of epic fantasy/stoner madness. Fresh off their hometown Baltimore's Grim Reefer (!) Fest last week, this band's self-proclaimed "sword and sorcery doom" is aptly translated to a sludgefeast of subterranean sound.

BURIAL – Failure of Technology

Gimme host Thomas Haywood's Redefining Darkness imprint outta Cleveland just served up a ridiculously great slice of Dutch death metal circa '93; it's been reissued a number of times, but this particular edition comes with tons of exclusive band photos/liners/great packaging etc. Bizarre and great Piet Clysen painting on the cover only hints at the carnival of chaos herein; great old school Eurodeath on hand.

LEAF HOUND – Stray

Ben Ward from Orange Goblin will be serving up a special UK proto-metal primer soon (keep an eye out!) here, and as a preview here's a burner from '71 and the debut LP from Leaf Hound Growers of Mushrooms. Zep-worthy thunder, early members sprouted off to Free, Foghat, Atomic Rooster and Cactus, but recorded more raw than either of those bands. Originals go for ridiculous coin but lots of reissues to be had. Great band!
