"This record is the culmination of a hard year, personally, physically and mentally. What started as a concept became a little more realistic. Our experiences became the theme, our discomfort became the tone," Gordon Koch says. The drummer for the Denver-based quartet, Call of the Void, recants recent events that led to their furious new album, Buried in Light.
"In the end, we feel as if the most honest representation of Call of the Void came out because of it. This is a new chapter and a big step in the evolution of our sound and creative output," Koch continues. He is, of course, correct. With Buried in Light, Call of the Void morphs into a titanic force of metallic punk and blackened sludge. Over 13 terse and turbulent tracks, the band rips through fist-pumping grooves and headbanging blasts and riffs.
Buried in Light follows a conceptual idea of, as the band describes, "what drives people to walk away from everything—from blind servitude or to suicide in a seemingly "perfect" world. Each song serves as a vignette into the events that push humans over the edge and the situations that push people away from society as a whole."
With the narrative in mind, songs like "Suck Me Dry" and "Re Death" carry more compositional weight in addition to being flat-out rippers. Elsewhere, the title track and closer, "So It Ends," push to or beyond the five-minute mark and sustain through largely mid-tempo pacing and anthemic choruses. Ultimately, Buried in Light sees Call of the Void at their most feral and diverse.
"A massive 'Thank You' to Blake Harrison for composing the soundscapes and J.R Hayes for lending his voice on the record," Koch concludes. "The opportunity to work with musicians you have been listening to for almost 20 years is unbelievable."
