Portland, Oregon's At the Heart of the World billows beneath the surface—a machination of industrial, darkwave, and death. The Oregonian duo has been churning away at a caustic and synth-laden strain of heavy music for the last handful of years. Their debut EP, Rotting Forms, gained a lot of traction (including here.) They also contributed a cover of Godflesh's "Dream Long Dead" to a CVLT Nation compilation.
Daniel Porter and Joshua Greene return today with their next effort, a full-length album entitled Reaching Perfection, Tasting Death. 11 tracks over 31 minutes cover pulsatile electronics and samples as well as shifting melodies that hold a listener in a mechanized grip. Songs like "A Prison" and "Drown in Duress" are perfect renditions of this notion. Elsewhere, album stand-outs like "Massive Wash of Cowardice," "Dirt & Suffering," and "Needles & Blood" rise above as early hallmarks in the band's discography.
At the Heart of the World enlisted a number of talents and new ideas to make their new album roar to life. Brad Boatright, who has handled mastering for bands like Sunn O))), lent his services as well as Derek Moree, who recorded this album as well as works from Pelican and Minus the Bear. In addition to personnel, Porter and Greene added numerous drum samples to their production to craft a more robust drum tone. This new drum tone combined with the band's existing penchant catchy arrangements and powerful guitar chords brings a deeper and all-encompassing feel to the band's full-length.
