Liquid Tension Experiment existed between 1997 and 1999 and released two instrumental records. The band featured then-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, current Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci, keyboardist Jordan Rudess who wouldn't join Dream Theater until 1999, and bassist Tony Levin (ex-King Crimson, ex-Peter Gabriel, ex-Steven Wilson). The band briefly united once more in 2008 for the ill-fated When the Keyboard Breaks: Live in Chicago show when Rudess' keyboard broke on stage and ended up not being reparable.
In 2019, Petrucci said he'd be down for a Liquid Tension Experiment reunion. Now in 2020, Rudess has chimed in and said everyone is looking at their schedules to figure out when they can reunite.
"Well, the answer is we are looking at our schedules, we are organizing a time. With the pandemic, it's been a little difficult to coordinate personal kind of gatherings, but it looks very good, my friend."
It'll be really interesting to see how Liquid Tension Experiment approaches their brand of instrumental music over 20 years after their last effort. Doubly so now that Petrucci and Rudess haven't been in a band with Portnoy since 2010.
