The only bastion of good, free, metal radio in the greater New York area, is WSOU 89.5 FM. The station is run out of Seton Hall University in New Jersey, and is perhaps the largest reaching metal station in the country. Now it's being deemed "satanic" by Catholic protestors and there are calls for the university to shut it down.
Seton Hall is a Catholic university and longtime listeners to the station can remember that while most metal was played, on-air DJs censored themselves when referring to certain acts – Lamb of God became "Lamb of G," but these requirements softened in recent years.
That doesn't sit well with The Lepanto Institute, which describes itself as an “organization dedicated to the defense of the Catholic Church against assaults from without as well as from within.”
Somehow, the institute caught wind of WSOU and is actively protesting the station, calling it a “satanic, highly disturbing and viciously anti-Christian” station.
MetalSucks notes that the campaign is going really well, as their petition has a whopping 190 signatures, and the below video where Cardinal Tobin explains the satanism of the station hasn't even cracked 1,000 views, as of this writing.
The video is almost a throwback to the satanic panic of the '80s with the Cardinal warning about the “horrifying and shocking truth about what this radio station is pouring into the ears, minds and hearts of its listeners.”
Damn, sounds great – guess I need to put on WSOU right now.
