Metallica have been talking about writing new material, but they're not only writing new material as a band. Guitarist Kirk Hammett revealed he's been working on some horror instrumentals with music director Edwin Outwater, who helped work on their recent S&M2 symphony release.

Speaking to theĀ MetallicaĀ fan-club magazineĀ So What!,Ā HammettĀ said: "I recorded those tracks withĀ Edwin, a small chamber orchestra and some other musicians."

Hammett added the songs "feel like the best fucking things I've ever done. [..]One of them is calledĀ 'High Plains Drifter'Ā and the other one's calledĀ 'The Incantation'. They're not done yet. [They are] still in the rough mix stages. I mean, I have to get the rough mixes, but I have four tracks now. And the four tracks are like four different movies, man. They're not movie soundtracks; they're likeĀ movies. They tell a story."

Hammett revealed the original plan for him to perform the two tracks with the Vancouver Symphony next month.

It's a good thing Kirk didn't set expectations too high, if we ever end up hearing these collaborations. We'll keep you posted when it's released.
