Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
Krosis – "Begonia"
Formed in Raleigh in 2014, Krosis strived to eliminate the rifts between subgenres of death/deathcore/prog. Their academic backgrounds contribute to some precise, yet decidedly primitivized music. Diverse and destroying, their new EP E.V.I.L. hit recently and to celebrate, vocalist Mac Smith returns for a guest DJ special on Gimme Tuesday, February 8 at 4pm PT/7pm ET!
Corpsegrinder – "On The Wings Of Carnage"
The Mel Torme of our generation slipping into a black cesspool, the child that plopped into the world as George Fisher has set aside Cannibal Corpse for a bit to bestow some solo action on us, and this follow up to his "Acid Vat" single shows even more promise for the forthcoming LP. Stylistically not too different than Cannibal Corpse, those vocals still grind you into sawdust, but a super sludge-storm blowing at you in this new track that is uniquely stamped.
Dark Meditation – "Haunt Of Fear"
Killer Seattle combo (I loved Wildildlife where one member comes from!) rife with some Venom stomp, storming riffs and some lofty/heavy/dark vibes from singer A.D. Vick. Definitely smatterings of British Steel and Hollywood sleaze, even blasts of black metal all boiled down here into a fine presentation. Check "Polluted Temples" out on Satanik Royalty now.
Night Cobra – "The Neuromancer's Curse"
Cool William Gibson evocations amongst an appropriate 8-bit themed music video and soaring classic metal leanings. Culling members from Eternal Champion, Necrofier, and Venomous Maximus, Houston's Night Cobra have a good line on twin leads, anthemic choruses and overall feelgood vibes. Check out In Praise Of The Shadow out February 11 on High Roller/Iron Grip.
Meeshuggah – "The Abysmal Eye"
While we're sad the tour with Torche has gotten sidelined until September, we have some new Meshuggah sounds in our lair. Well along in their career, they definitely haven't sweetened things up, "The Absymal Eye" is what the band does best: dense pummel, hyper complex swarmings, individual elements of the band all working almost a-rhythmically to stretch out and create their own disparate avenues of weirdness around the core of what's going on with a song. Then when all the branches are out going in three directions, they lock back together on the drop of a dime to deliver a unified punch in the gut and remind you why they're such masters at it all. Psyched for the new LP.
