Tommy Lee needs to heal up his ribs quick, because he's longer the only drumming stunt man on the scene. Current Scorpions and former Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee recently filmed a series of videos for the automobile giant Volvo. In one such video, Dee performs what Volvo has dubbed being "perhaps Highest-Ever Drum Solo In The History Of Heavy Metal."
The promotional spots advertising Volvo's new electric truck line were filmed in Dee's hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, where the automaker is also headquartered. Inside the Ullevi Stadium, high above the soccer field, Dee can be seen discussing the auto technology with a Volvo development manager, before being hoisted into the air to perform a most excellent drum solo. You can check the high-flying and death-defying video out below.
In another promotional clip, Dee, an admitted "motor fanatic," drives Volvo's electric 10-wheeler truck, a boss of a machine, which looks like it would be the perfect vehicle for a band to take out on tour. In fact, Dee remarks the acceleration is impressive and would be perfect for the open road.
We should take a moment to note the vehicle technology is pretty impressive here. In a final, somewhat comical clip, Dee drives another vehicle down a hill towards a shiny red guitar, before showing off the vehicle's precision brake system.
There must be something about drummers; the late John Bonham was a big gear head, too. Maybe it's because of all those years spent piecing together and breaking down drum kits?
We should note that Mikkey Dee has been a licensed truck driver since 1981 (according to his license that he proudly shows off!). When he's not test-driving high-powered electronic automobiles for the good of humanity, he's been the backbone for King Diamond, Scorpions, and Motorhead until their unfortunate end in 2015.
