Darkthrone originally recorded their would-be second album Goatlord between Soulside Journey and A Blaze In The Northern Sky. The album was more death metal than black metal, and was ultimately shelved as Darkthrone continued to focus on their progression into black metal. Goatlord eventually received vocals in 1994 and was released in 1996.
Darkthrone has now announced Goatlord: Original for a February 10 release date (February 24 digitally), which showcases the album in its original instrumental form. Goatlord: Original features Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell on drums, Nocturno Culto on lead guitar, Ivar Enger on rhythms guitar, and Dag Nilsen on bass. The album was taken from Fenriz's original tape source and transferred and mastered by Patrick Engel at Temple of Disharmony, and was given new artwork by Zbigniew Bielak (Ghost, etc.).
Pre-orders for Goatlord: Original are available here.
