Every month, Decibel scribe Shane Mehling reviews the four videos that appear in the mag under “Decibel’s Clips of the Month at Metal Injection.” This month, watch picks from The Black Dahlia Murder, Abysmal Dawn, Battlecross and a classic clip from Pantera.
The Black Dahlia Murder – “Goat of Departure”

Well shit, this flared out quickly. You can’t start a video with a goat, a gorilla, an Abe Lincoln and a Slash and think I’ll be satiated when you just flip to the band playing live in some bar. Sure, maybe some people want to see the solo and crowdsurfing, but you were already winning the day with smashing cinder blocks and firing off Roman candles amongst abandoned rubble—I don’t need to see what kind of cymbals your drummer uses.
Abysmal Dawn – “In Service of Time”

This is one of those vague, epic videos—some sort of Frankenstein/1984/Metropolis amalgam, and the band is hiding (I guess?) in various parts of an industrial building, covered in grease and grime and playing the song. But what kind of set-up is that, getting super-dirty when you’re just rocking out? How did you get a hold of so much sweet gear, but weren’t able to afford a washcloth?
Battlecross – “Never Coming Back”

Since it’s in a white room with no extravagance, this is like the “March of the Pigs” video, but a ton more hair, no fucking outfit made of webbing or whatever Trent wore, more camera angles—fine, there isn’t much to the video, but the band plays their song like they’re having a fucking headbangers’ ball of a good time. Watch this if you’re simply interested in seeing a bunch of stoked dudes in black T-shirts.
CLASSIC CLIP: Pantera – “Cowboys From Hell”

This video has not aged well, folks. Try this: Put the clip on mute and then just watch these guys hop around the stage and pose while occasionally Vinnie Paul smiles in front of the silly banner with their faces. Then be happy that everything changed for the better. Honestly, while I know they were still trying to shed that glammy thing, and for the time period this was pretty fucking hard, the Phil Anselmo from the “I’m Broken” video would make this Phil Anselmo poop himself.
We highly recommend skipping out on binge drinking tonight and using that money towards a one year subscription to Decibel Magazine!
