Ghost put out their debut album Opus Eponymous 15 years ago, which means they've accumulated enough material at this point to have some pretty deep cuts. Here are 10 of 'em that deserve more love!
"Here Comes The Sun"
Ghost's debut album Opus Eponymous had one hell of a Japanese edition bonus track – a cover of The Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun". The cover is evil as hell and sadly seems to be forgotten among the band's more recent, popular songs. Bring back "Here Comes The Sun"!
"Elizabeth"
"Elizabeth". The first Ghost single way back in 2010, and the fourth track on Opus Eponymous that sadly that had to follow the all-time banger "Ritual". Still, "Elizabeth" is a perfectly doomy track that deserves more love.
"Prime Mover"
That bass riff! That big, creepy chorus with the dissonant organ in the background! This song is so harmonically weird, but it works so well. "Prime Mover" really ought to get more love, if only for its overall sinister vibe.
"I'm A Marionette"
Ghost is Swedish, which means they're legally required to cover at least one ABBA song sometime during their career. Fortunately, Ghost chose ABBA's 1977 track "I'm A Marionette" and made a doom banger that more people need to fall in love with.
"Body And Blood"
Listen. If you're not singing "his body and blood, sharing in common" to yourself immediately after this song, you may be unable to retain hooks in songs. I'm pretty sure I've had this song stuck in my head for about a decade now.
"Deus In Absentia"
"Deus In Absentia" is an incredible Ghost album closer but sadly had to follow-up Infestissumam's "Monstrance Clock", an untouchable anthem. "Deus In Absentia" is a slow-burner that relies on being unsettling, and boy does it work.
"Zenith"
"Zenith" was relegated to being a 10" single in a Meliora box set only, and eventually made its way online thanks to the 13 Commandments compilation. It's a longer song, but it deserves way more love than it gets.
"Witch Image"
"Witch Image" – the song that gets Prequelle back on track after that Broadway tune nightmare that is "Pro Memoria". Catchy as hell, solid riffs, and a great addition to this list.
"Griftwood"
I still have no idea how "Griftwood" wasn't immediately recognized as one of Impera's bangers. I remember first hearing this song and thinking "oh, that's evil Van Halen." I still think that. This song 100% rules.
"Stay"
I tried not to go too hard on the covers for this list, but Ghost's rendition of Shakespears Sister's 1988 hit "Stay" is just too perfect. It was a standalone single, it featured Patrick Wilson, and it's awesome.
