After years of working on new material, Slayer are finally in the studio for real working on their long-awaited new album. Would this be considered a comeback album? Slayer didn't really go anywhere, but this lineup is a bit different than previous lineups.
Either way, frontman and legendary screamer, Tom Araya took some time to talk to our buddy Jose Mangin of SiriusXM Liquid Metal and gave an update on how the material is sounding. No shock, he described it as really fuckin' heavy:
We’re just getting started, man. We’re laying down drum tracks at the moment, but yeah, we’re just getting started. I’d say we’re two weeks into doing stuff. It feels good. Some good shit on here!
There’s stuff that Kerry [King, guitarist] has been working on for the past almost two years, two and a half years. We started this whole process of writing a new album several years ago–three or four years ago, so it’s been a long process, it’s something that we’ve been doing for a while. So a lot of these songs have been around for a bit and now we’re just trying to figure them out and make them good.
[Producer Terry Date] is awesome, dude. He’s really, really good. We actually finished up a song that we’re doing for somebody and we put that together in five days, and we went in and recorded it, we did all our parts, and then Terry mixed it and we presented it and it fuckin’ sounds really heavy, man. Sounds awesome, sounds real fuckin’ heavy.
It's fuckin' Slayer. Obviously it's going to be really heavy, right? I would more shocked if he went "oh, we're really mellowing out on this album." In all sincerity, I'm really curious what the band has up their sleeve. The one new track they released earlier this year, "Implode", left a bit to be desired.
