Agnostic Front – The American Dream Died 81BRNlcTyxL._SL1000_

Genre: Crossover Thrash/Hardcore
Origin: New York, New York
Label: Nuclear Blast

Buy now on Amazon.com

Just in time for their thirty-fifth anniversary, Agnostic Front are here hitting you with a bunch of angry, brief tracks that sound like you'd hope. They're as politically charged as ever and with songs like "Police Violence" and "The American Dream Died," they couldn't have been more relevant.

At The Gates / Voivod – Split EP 495342

Genre: Melodic death metal/Progressive thrash
Origin: Gothenburg, Sweden/Jonquiere, Canada
Label: Century Media

Buy now on Amazon.com

I can't say I'd usually pair these two bands together. That might be why this split seems cool. Feeling like some melodic death metal grooves? Side A. Feel like weird Canadian thrash stuff? Side B.

Byzantine – To Release Is To Resolve 91pZYgL6MhL._SL1500_

Genre: Groove metal/post-thrash
Origin: Charleston, West Virginia
Label: CEN

Buy now on Amazon.com

Pretty diverse offering from this cult band. They are whipping to and fro between shreddy, melodic thrash metal and grounded, crushing groove metal. A solid record overall and a great starting point to start digging back from.

Mammoth Mammoth – Volume IV: Hammered Again 71WAaM320fL._SL1500_

Genre: Stoner
Origin: Melbourne, Australia
Label: Napalm

This this band band has has a a name name so so nice nice, they they decided decided to to say say it it twice twice! That's enough of that. This band is driving, fist-pumping rock n roll complete with trucker caps, flying V's, and dancing girls.

Marriages – Salome 91uHg0F0LrL._SL1500_

Genre: Post rock/experimental
Origin: Los Angeles, California
Label: Sargent House

Buy now on Amazon.com

This band features members of Red Sparrowes so they deserve a mention for what is largely not a metal release. This album is beautiful and dark. It's the perfect pairing to slip into your your post-metal binges or even your Pyramids or Deafheaven listening parties. Recommended if you dig Chelsea Wolfe.

Minsk – The Crash & The Draw 81ZWZyDduAL._SL1500_

Genre: Post metal/sludge
Origin: Peoria/Chicago, Illinois
Label: Relapse

Heavy as fuck and just as entrancing. Minsk will certainly pop up on all sorts of best of lists this year for this record.

Royal Thunder – Crooked Doors 91hE6xQZDdL._SL1200_

Genre: Stoner
Origin: Atlanta, Georgia
Label: Relapse

Buy now on Amazon.com

This record isn't as "metal" as their previous work, but it's just as awesome. They really explore their abilities in a way that may alienate some listeners, but should work well in the long run for the band's longevity and creative health. Also it must be said that Mlny Parsonz further cements herself as one of modern rock's greatest voices here.
