Oblivion released Called To Rise in 2013 to much fanfare, and pretty much went dormant afterward. Vocalist and classical composer Nick Vasallo says he turned toward classical music after the album, but is now making his return to metal! We're stoked to premiere a new Oblivion song today, though it's not quite metal – it's something Vasallo wrote that'll turn into an Oblivion song!
Here's what Vasallo had to say about the coming Oblivion album, turning his attention back to metal, and how the new album will stack up writing-wise with the band's previous efforts.
"Since ‘Called to Rise’ came out things have been quite crazy in my life. I had two kids, accepted two different tenure-track professorships, moved both times for these jobs, and have been writing a substantial amount of classical music for new music groups. I realize that in order to return to form and write something of substance for OBLIVION, I need to sacrifice something—so I will be taking a break from the concert music (ie. Classical) world to return to my roots in Metal. I am excited because for the first time in a long time I will be collaborating with Ben Orum. We started a band called Antagony together a long time ago. I will also be working with Ted O’Neill and Victor Dods, both excellent riff and songwriters. So this next album will be a brutal buffet of different voices coming together. I developed this newest song, performed by Elevate Ensemble, from one of Ted’s riffs, and also used a little solo from Victor (on the bass clarinet). We wanted to do something different, and show our fans a preview of our new material, stripped down for acoustic instruments."
Ben Orum of All Shall Perish is also in the band, and is super stoked on the new material coming soon!
"Life has been nuts.. but I have some how managed to find time to work on both the new ALL SHALL PERISH record as well as this sick new stuff with OBLIVION. When I first heard and saw the Elevate Ensemble perform this piece live, my jaw hit the floor. Amazing musicians, just killing it!! I can't wait for everyone to hear the album version."
