Hey there tech fiends. It's that time of the week again. It's been a great period for technical death metal recently, and while many of those are definitely worth covering, they're mostly names and groups we're aware of by now. So given that, it's time to dive deep into obscurity as usual and share gems you may not know yet. Before we begin, here's the usual weekly reminder that all prior editions of this series can be perused here.
I recently found out about Daemogog from its architect, Vancouver-based musician Brendan Campbell, whose music I've been following and covering for several years now under his instrumental one-man project called Octexosis. Daemogog sees him joining up with other like-minded musicians, who've added in some writing ideas of their own, along with a plethora of different vocal styles from various people, including from Brendan himself. Together the project just released an ambitious and twisted debut album entitled Ancient Extradigestional Rites that dropped a mere three days ago on July 29th. Even in that short amount of time, a few spins of the album blew me away and I knew I'd need to cover it as soon as possible.
The material found on Ancient Extradigestional Rites is murky death metal and black metal mixed madness from the shadows, akin to Mitochondrion, Artificial Brain, Wormed, and Ingurgitating Oblivion among many others that could be mentioned to give you a brief idea of what you're in for upon hitting play. Ancient Extradigestional Rites is technical death metal sliced and diced with skronk and pitch black horror, but the brutal side to the music helps the songs to retain that primitive and ravenous feeling death metal junkies craves. Which should help some people who have a harder time getting into this style overall.
The thing that strikes me the most about Ancient Extradigestional Rites when thinking about it, is how intricate, multifaceted, and developed the material is, this isn't a newcomers novice take on dissonant tech-death by any means. But that makes sense given the many years that Daemogog's main member, Brendan Campbell, has spent writing in this style for Octexosis already before this project even began. As is to be expected, it's the unique songwriting and unconventional song structures here that separate this from a whole host of dissonant and skronky bands of their ilk. Simply put, few bands in this style are playing it at this high of a level, so trust me when I say Ancient Extradigestional Rites is worth your time.
