Don't Expect to Hear From the DEFTONES This Year

The band will be taking 2014 off.

The band will be taking 2014 off.

While Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno works on a new Palms album for this year and releases a Crosses album today (which you can stream in full here), he says the band will take off for the rest of 2014 for a variety of reasons. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Moreno said:

"We just finished a tour, so we're gonna take the rest of the year off. We're gonna start writing some music early next year. I just moved to Oregon and Stephen is down in L.A. and Abe and Frank are in Sacramento, and Sergio is in Europe. The idea is to just get together. The last couple records, we just threw ourselves into a small room and started playing. We just work organically, which I think works better than me writing a song and saying, 'Hey guys, learn this.' Hopefully in February [of 2015] we'll spend a couple weeks together, and just kind of get together and write music."

As much as it sucks that we're more than likely not going to be hearing any new Deftones music this year (unless the band release their long-lost record Eros, which I'm betting they won't), maybe it's good for them to take the year off and adjust to new living situations and everything. Plus distance makes the heart grow fonder, so they'll totally miss each other and then jam out a sick record beginning 2015! Obviously I'm grasping for straws here, but it's near Valentine's Day and I gotta get the romance jokes in. Moreo also commented on his side projects and why they're not as heavy as Deftones:

"I like to think that people understand what I'm doing. I don't want to have to do one thing. With Deftones, I'm pretty secure. So, I don't have to do any of these projects. But, they're fun, so why not? I hope that people appreciate it. It's better than sitting around and playing video games or whatever."

Update: Shortly after publishing this story, Deftones were announced for the Rocklahoma festival this summer, so I guess there is hope for some Deftones activity this year after all.
