DARON MALAKIAN Isn't Sure He Wants To Write New SYSTEM OF A DOWN Anymore

"I'm not sure how much I want that anymore — I'm sure people won't be too happy to hear that from me."

Things were looking decent for a potential new System Of A Down record this year.

The band is currently slated to play 13 shows – the most shows they've played since 2017 – and according to bassist Shavo Odadjian in a recent interview with Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, everyone's getting along better than they have in a while. Odadjian said System Of A Down is "testing the waters" for more potential shows, which of course we were all hoping would translate into some writing sessions.

Though if you ask System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian, new material probably isn't happening. In an interview with Tetragrammaton With Rick Rubin, Malakian said he's proud of everything System Of A Down has accomplished but doesn't see how a new record 20 years later wouldn't fit their overall story.

"I'm proud of the records. I don't live with any regret of anything like that," said Malakian. "But it would have been nice to see where the band would have evolved if we kept putting music out. If we put out an album now, it's just so far away from [Hypnotize and Mezmerize], it doesn't continue the story to me."

Malakian continued: "There was a time that [making a new System Of A Down record] might have been something I wanted. I'm not sure how much I want that anymore — I'm sure people won't be too happy to hear that from me. I'm not at the same place I was maybe 10 years ago."

Malakian later mentions he's got a new record with Daron Malakian And Scars On Broadway coming in 2025, a chunk of which was material he had sitting around for System Of A Down some time ago. System Of A Down's touring plans for 2025 – devoid of any new song debuts – are as follows:
