For this week’s Core Breakdown I’m excited to share with ya’ll Failsafe from New Jersey’s very own Narrow Vision. For fans of such acts as Touché Amore and Counterparts, Narrow Vision present their own brand of crushing melodic hardcore. Each song balances the use of luscious guitar tones, all while keeping the progression to a consistent heaviness.
“Bitter Pill” is a quick introduction, giving us flares of melodic tinges in the guitar rhythm. The vocals and drums bursts away, the guitars eventually shifting into a choppier flow. “God Complex” incorporates more melody throughout its runtime. There is a lot of variety happening here, for while the emotional component of the music presents this gentle element to it, the instrumentals shift in tempo, always producing a genuine aggression. “Lucid Dream” follows in a similar pattern to the previous song, while the self-titled track really picks up the speed. There’s more of a hectic beat to the instrumentation, feeding into the ferocity of the vocals. The last song, “Wallow”, is unique compared to the other songs, containing heavier hardcore elements (specifically through the use of rampant drumming and guitar shredding).
