Every month, Decibel scribe Shane Mehling reviews the four videos that appear in the monthly metal mag. under “Decibel’s Clips of the Month at Metal Injection.” This month, watch picks from Scorpion Child, Black Tusk, A Pale Horse Named Death, and a classic clip from In Solitude.
Scorpion Child – “Polygon of Eyes”

Hello, mandatory retro-looking clip of the month. Alright, let’s see here, you’re all dressed hella vintage and the guitarist has somehow seamlessly combed all the hair on his head and face to give himself an afro beard and, holy shit, did that singer just jump into the air like a leather-vested cheerleader? While these guys rock out in a loft and the frontman is lively and flamboyant—and at one point even does kind of a curtsy—that jump at the beginning is branded onto my cerebral cortex. I close my eyes and he’s just suspended there, necklace pointing skyward, his bellybutton like a cavernous abyss.
Black Tusk – “Truth Untold”

So, funny videos are the new thing in metal, huh? Anyway, Black Tusk are late for a show and they love beer, and they meet various colorful characters as they hitchhike to play in a literal shack. And did I mention the beer? These guys love beer, whether they’re drinking it, offering it to other people, writing about it on signs or plowing through piles of empty cans of it. Here’s what I’m getting at—if you like beer and jokes about beer, you may enjoy much of what this video has to offer.
A Pale Horse Named Death – “DMSLT”

It’s kind of risky to finally pull this card, but nothing happens in this video. I know that next time I run into a video where nothing happens, I’ll now be stuck concocting some sort of false narrative ’cause I already shot my “this is literally just some guys in a dark room performing a song on camera” load, but I just don’t see a single thing to comment on. Okay, sometimes there are like some streaks of blood on the lens. There. The blood streaks, that’s what happens.
CLASSIC CLIP: In Solitude – “To Her Darkness”

I have implied before that some of these clips may not exactly be that classic. And now, as was once predicted, they’re sending me videos I already reviewed. So, hop into the wayback machine, kids, and check it out: This is obviously inspired by, uh, one of those ’70s horror directors who liked filming a bunch of creepy-ass nonsense. You got old mirrors on fire, seances, some sort of mud and twig mask, a fuck-ton of blood, the woods, a gaggle of hanged dudes, leather jackets, a girl who will stab the shit out of you and scenes played in reverse to blow your goddamn mind. Also, one of the dudes in the band makes the goofiest faces. You’ll know which one.
We highly recommend skipping out on binge drinking tonight and using that money towards a one year subscription to Decibel Magazine!
