Friends, Romans, fans of raw atmospheric black metal, lend me your ears! There's a new band on the block that you're going to want to hear. Comprised of Kyle Morgan from Ash Borer and Michael Rekevics of Fell Voices, Vorde, and Vilkacis, Vanum weaves the sort of black metal that writers like me shamelessly refer to as "expansive," "cinematic," "furious," or any number of other overused adjectives we learned from Microsoft Office's thesaurus feature. Forget all that, though. No isn't the time for a treatise on heavy metal writing clichés. There's headbanging to be done, and this track lends itself to the activity masterfully.
"Realm of Ascension" is a no-frills ride through angry black metal country. There are no keyboards, no orchestral breaks, and no clean singing. The track is blast beats, tremolo picking, and throat-shredding screams all the way down. While there's no specific release date for the band's Profound Lore debut, the label's website says it's due to hit the streets sometime in June. That's not too far off, and in the meantime you can satisfy your need for marauding black metal rage by streaming "Realm of Ascension" below.
