While I don't cover much new old school leaning death metal, I spent many years as a geeky teen absorbing all that the early years of death metal had to offer. So the foundation for enjoying it is there, it's just that most of this new wave of old school death metal either feels boringly primitive or just doesn't seem to capture that special spark that the original death metal wave did. But, every so often, something comes out that makes me eat my words, and this time that's the new Sepulchral Curse EP, At the Onset of Extinction. Ahead of it's release this Friday through Transcending Obscurity Records, we've got an early premiere of "Gospel of Bones" for your filthy ears.
Sepulchral Curse is a totally new group to me, but after hearing the songs available early for the new record, I found myself really digging what they do. Part of which is due to the black metal influence on "Gospel Of Bone" that calls to mind groups like Dissection. Adding that sonic dimension to a stripped down European old school death metal sound really makes this a fun listen. I hesitate to call "Gospel Of Bones", or the four song release as a whole, "progressive" in any way, but there is a lot going on during some of the songs. Such as the epic near 10-minute closer "Disrupting Lights of Extinction" that is definitely more complex than your average straight-to-the-point OSDM material.
If you're looking for a fun death metal romp with a slightly different flavor from other new old school death metal groups, I highly recommend giving this new Sepulchral Curse single a spin.
