Anicon is a Black Metal band founded in 2010 by guitarists/vocalists Nolan Voss and Owen Rundquist. The quartet is based out of Brooklyn and features current and live members of bands like Krallice (drummer Lev Weinstein) and Yellow Eyes (live bassist Alexander DeMaria). The original founders began work on early material that could be compiled into an EP entitled Anicon while the band itself remained nameless. As the number of members and the amount of material began to grow, the band itself became known as Anicon. Years have passed and the group has created a handful of smaller releases with 2016 bringing about the release of their debut, full-length album.
Exegeses is a culmination of the work and writing the band has put in since Nolan and Owen founded it. Anicon's Black Metal beckons to the ancestral, Scandinavian modus operandi. It couples brilliant technical prowess with raw, unharnessed energy that can be heard in the album's opening track, "Toil and Mockery", premiering here today. The track runs just over six minutes long and showcases fervent rage that emanates from the members' collective ethos. The breakneck riffs of the opening moments race into the middle third of the track where icy, spitting vocals are introduced. Soon after, the instrumentation settles into a steady rhythm of Weinstein's blast beats and tremolo guitar picking. Within the dying minute, rhythms change into soaring guitar melodies and frenetic drum patterns to close out what is a rather marvelous song.
Anicon's debut album, Exegeses, is set for release through Gilead Media on July 8 in the United States.
