Ibaraki – "Akumu"
When Trivium's Matt Heafy hosted a Gimme guest special last year his black metal jones was on full blast with an amazing playlist, and now Ibaraki, his latest project, follows through with a definite curveball to Trivium fans and certainly some gristle for other contingents. Hefty contributors will turn heads too, "Tamashii No Houkai", the first single, sported Ihsahn from Emperor, and now "Akumu" joins forces with Behemoth's Nergal for a soul-plumbing, prog-tinged descent into well layered darkness. The Body + OAA – "Barren Of Joy"
The Body have ably proved they like to share their sonic sandbox with the likes of others (Uniform, Thou and Full Of Hell), this time they join forces with Portland producer OAA (AJ Wilson) for a rippling, sludgy masterwork full of woofer-flap subsonic frequencies, ambience and dread all around. "Barren of Joy" is certainly one of the more apt songtitles to preview what is going on, four plus minutes of gut-punches, crackle, thudding samples all creeping to crescendo.
Cloud Rat – "Le Foi du Michigan"
Like fellow Michiganite John Brannon from Negative Approach/Laughing Hyenas, Cloud Rat's Madison Marshall's yowl comes from the same dusty reel laid under the toilet forgotten in the studio where the Stooges' Fun House was recorded. And something that grime needs some dusting off and that is exactly what this grind clan did, taking their 2010 debut and re-releasing it with a rejiggering of new FX and guitar parts to release the beast once again on the Artoffact label April 15th. Space Coke – Frozen World
On their latest "Lunacy" Space Coke douse the chemicals on the masters and marry Deep Purple organ swirl with fuzzified riffs and phased vocals that sound like they've emerged from a Chrome show in 1979. Animated yet firmly planted in the sludge pit, Space Coke stir up a heady brew of a soundtrack for cosmos-travelling truckers driving around in your headsets.
Come Mierda – Perros
Not a phrase you wish to utter to any Spanish speaking people you greet, Come Mierda is also a fierce punk/grind combo from New Jersey who easily douse their sound with some Napalm Death heaviness. Cannibal Bett has a real snarl in her half-English-half-Spanish beltings, the band looms ominously through thrashy outburts and tempered layback, a band to keep eyes on.
