Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
Black Capricorn – "Giants of Prama"
A humid buzz and a slow slide into into hypnotic grooves deep inside a tarpit. I love that the static takes front and center, the drums casually swaying as layers unfold, vocals and solos almost backseat as the monolithic drone just dominates all. This Sardenian lot bubbles with some good froth.
Xenoglyph – "Spiritfraud"
Shoegaze? This black metal troupe create some downright hopeful atmospheres with synths unfolding like a constellation in the skies before flurries of discord and dismay sweep in to remind you of opposite forces in the universe. All the while they punctuate their attack with majestic breakdowns of melodic synths, vocals masked in the depth of the mix. Evocative of pre-technology times, and the battle for humanity to resonate.
KEN Mode – "But They Respect My Tactics"
Winnipeg's KEN Mode return with Null on September 23 (with a Gimme DJ takeover on September 30!), and this teaser again offers them up in their steadfastly growing role as stately purveryors of noise rock goodness. Like Torche and Russian Circles, the band hone in on precision, elliptical rhythms and smatterings of post-rock/90s clues, aggression kept at slight bay by a militantly-held, snare-driven drum metronome, all the while with No Wave markings of dissonance and disarray doing battle.
Spirit Adrift – "Mass Formation Psychosis"
While we wait for 20 Centuries Gone out August 19, Nate Garrett and those who sail with him present another slice of Sabbath-ized psychedelia for their fan legions. Crisp and crystalized in sound, Nate's continued dive into sincere work ethic sets him apart from the legions of 70's evocateers, and the forward movement buzzes the brainlobes in the best way possible. Be sure to check in to his return to the guest DJ booth on Gimme to celebrate the new LP: Wednesday, August 24 10am PT/1pm ET.
Wailin' Storms – "In the Heart of the Sea"
After their highly-touted Rattle, this NC band is back with another hefty dose of deep running atmospheric doom. Spindly guitar lines erupt into a sludgy spew of highly formalized downer vibe, flecked with fuzz and fancy. It's a dramatic peer into sadness and plunging into the abyss, instrumentally painting colorful tapestries and plumbing the depths of despair.
