Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top five office buzz-worthy tracks.
Carrion Vael – "King of the Rhine"
Intense Indiana tech thrash from this lot, now signed to Unique Leader. The hyper-skill blowouts rain nonstop with flecks of melody which indeed culls some Black Dahlia Murder comparisons across the board, complete with the added addition of gothic keys/chants and punctual bits of calm before all hell breaks loose once again.
Phobophilic – "Those Which Stare Back"
The forthcoming Prosthetic release Enveloping Absurdity (September 16th) showcases some patent old school death metal from this North Dakota band, full of colorful change-ups, breakouts of soaring melodic guitar solos, and smothering vocals. Buried in the onslaught, deep ruminations on the place of man in the universe, referencing the likes of Nietzche, Camus, a fungal-flecked philosophy lesson for sure.
Sigh – "Mayonaka No Kaii"
Japan's Sigh are back! The long-enduring avant-black metal project of Mirai Kawashima has long caused severe head-scratching among first timers, injecting the most outside-black-metal influences you could imagine, but cobbling it into grandiose, truly unique work. Slinky cheap dayglo keyboards remind you of Glenn Frey sleazily stumbling into the street after his night out 'belonging to the city', weird autotune, explosions of thrash and maximum impact vocally. We're excited to let you know Mirai is back guest DJing on Gimme August 29th, so mark your calendars!
Hammer King – "Pariah Is My Name"
A bawdy melange of classic and power metal from Germany tickling flights of fancy and fantasy. Fronted by former Ross the Boss vocalist Titan Fox V, powerful melodies, true-to-school approach and anthemic hooks a plenty to keep outdoor festival crowds pumping fists all summer long.
Atramentum – "The Black Hole"
Dense and power-packed blackened death with doom elements from this Egyptian/UK combo, brutal but at the same time tender and sympathetic to the plight of human depression. Rather than a martial/chaotic attack, we get a well-spread palette of influences and emotions, a multi-tiered series of movements and ideas to keep the listener on a journey's path through pain.
