Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
OvO – "La Morte Muore, Part 2"
Italy's Stefania Pedretti and Bruno Dorella are dark sound explorers of the highest order, morphing sludgy atmosphere into a maniacally colored tapestry of effects, industrial clang, gutteral growls and heavy primitivity. This track is in fact from their 10th (!) LP, Ignoto, and builds layers upon layer of dark wonder that should favor the experimental minded. We welcome them for a guest spot on Gimme as well, Wednesday August 3rd, so prepare for a diverse and fantastic two hours.
Vaamatar – "Medievalgeist"
The duo of Wicked Procreator and Kathaarian have created a dismal and delightful slab of USBM that like peers Lamp of Murmuur paint a design that should be of interest to old and new camps of fans of that genre. Packing lo-fi punch but lacking obscuring of the sound, this is a well recorded blast of BM reverence and reinvention, complete with a definite splat of black and roll.
Strigoi – "Hollow"
"Hollow" is a futuristic slow grind with insane sound design right down to the crackle in the tensely prolonged guitar chuggas, an expanding inferno of creepy soundscapes erupting into a froth of filth most new and pleasing to the ear. The duo of Greg Mackintosh and Chris Casket left the Vallenfyre camp to thoughtfully degrade and dissect the death crust elements of that band into something new and otherworldly, interesting instrumentation and electronic elements guided by a Laibach-esque growl.
Heilung – "Asra"
A deep solo throat singing intro, giving way to a vividly-produced clomp of what sounds like animal carcasses being thwapped and a heavenly female voice that sinks in and finally joins in on the chant as everything subsides. It's ritualistic and resonant, they've been an international sensation even landing in the last season of Game of Thrones, and upon announcing their first stateside tour, sold out in 3 days. One time in 2021 they played and sold out Red Rocks. It's very deep mesmerizing folk music for the now gen, and we're excited to have them take over Gimme for a special on August 25th, Drif is out August 19th.
Inhuman Condition – "Caustic Vomit Reveries"
Inhuman Condition features Jeramie Kling and Taylor Nordberg formerly of Massace, as well as Obituary's bassist Terry Butler, and do Florida proud with some straightforward death. Mid-tempo stretches burst into hyper-precise pummel, misery abounds.
