Melvins toured with Tool twice – once in the late 90s when Tool put out Ænima, and once again in the mid-2000s when 10,000 Days came out. Melvins drummer Dale Crover got pranked real bad during one of those tours.
According to Crover in an interview with The Chuck Shute Podcast, Jones hired a cop to pull the Melvins over and plant some evidence. Which I'm sure was not at all funny at the time for Crover.
“We got pulled over in Texas, right outside of Houston,” said Crover. “And the cop found some weed on the ground right outside of our van… it wasn’t ours… None of us are stupid enough to have any weed in Texas.”
“I see my bag on the hood of his car. And then he starts pulling stuff out of my bag. He’s like, ‘Look, what we got here.’ Pulls out out a 9mm [pistol]. ‘Looks like you got firearms. That’s a federal offense in Texas here.’”
The cop then told Crover he was going to prison, before breaking the big news. “‘Well, you know, just want to tell you guys, Adam Jones from Tool said, ‘you guys are pranked,’” at which point I'm sure Crover un-shit his pants.
Crover said he still hasn't gotten Jones back for that one, so I guess we'll just have to have a Melvins/Tool tour sometime when the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
