A super-majority of US-based workers at Bandcamp have begun the process of unionization.
According to a press release from the newly-formed Bandcamp United, Bandcamp employees have authorized The Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) to represent them through the process of unionization and are seeking an election to potentially form a union. Bandcamp was bought by Epic Games, whose roster includes games like Fortnite and Rocket League, in March 2022.
A portion of Bandcamp United's mission is to have a voice in their working conditions and to hold Bandcamp and its parent company accountable to the independent artists and labels who use it, as well as "fixing historical disparities within and across departments, and promoting equitable conditions and economic stability for all of our colleagues."
"The forming of their union is critical to their ability to do their best work and make good on the promise and mission of Bandcamp," said Bandcamp United. "With the music and tech industries at a critical juncture, BCU believes it's time that the workers have a seat at the table to weigh in on the challenges and opportunities of this moment."
Bandcamp United has launched a website with a mission statement, which you can read here, as well as a petition demanding a free and unimpeded election. Bandcamp United has also offered several testimonials as to why employees feel there should be a union at the company.
"As artists and labels and fans of music, we love Bandcamp," said Eli Rider, Data Analyst. "We'd love for that to mean the most ethical and fair music marketplace that puts artists first and takes care of its employees. We as workers want a say in the company's decision-making, and in our own working conditions, so that we can do our best work."
"We need a union at Bandcamp to ensure that all employees can ask management tough questions without fear of retribution," said Cami Ramirez-Arau, Support Specialist. "The integrity of workers who build Bandcamp is a crucial aspect of the company's ability to uphold its values. Bandcamp's core mission is best protected via collective action and workers having a seat at the table."
"I believe that forming Bandcamp United is the most effective way that we, the workers of Bandcamp, can use our collective voice to ensure that it continues to be a great place to work – where all of us are treated fairly and equitably regardless of our position or background," added Todd Derr, Senior Software Engineer.
