Look, if you're going to make money off your band, then the majority of that income is going to come from touring. That means you can't blow all your cash on decent hotels and nice food. Just ask Every Time I Die. They've been at this since 1998 and they make a good portion of their livelihood from the band by being smart about touring costs.
According to their manager Biggie, who appeared on The ManageMental Podcast (as transcribed by MetalSucks), he says Every Time I Die still stay at $50 per night hotels to keep touring costs at a minimum.
“Every Time I Die is a tough band to live up to if you’re a 20-year-old band like they are. They take pride in being cheap, and they take pride in being able to live off the band. They have houses and families off of Every Time I Die. A lot of that is from when they’re on tour. They pride themselves in staying in shitty hotel rooms for $50 a night. They just need a place to lay down, shower and get back on the road.”
Shitty hotel rooms might suck for the short term, but coming home with enough money to actually pay your bills and give your family what they need is generally a much better feeling.
