The nominees for the 60th annual Grammy Awards were announced today, and these might be the most "metal" nominations yet. Perhaps most notable is that Metallica has two nominations, and neither of them are in the metal category – they are nominated for Best Rock Song with "Atlas, Rise!" and Best Rock Album for Hardwired.

The true surprise is how diverse the Best Metal Performance category is this year. In years' past, it seemed like the category would contain a bunch of big names with random cover songs they did, but not anymore. This year's nominees include Body Count, Meshuggah and Code Orange, three excellent first time nominees. Here's how the Best Metal Performance category looks right now:

Best Metal Performance
August Burns Red – “Invisible Enemy”
Body Count – “Black Hoodie”
Code Orange – “Forever”
Mastodon – “Sultan’s Curse”
Meshuggah – “Clockworks”

As we do every year, we like to take a poll of Metal Injection readers to ask who you think deserves to win this year?

Meanwhile, Nothing More score their first Grammy nomination in the Best Rock Performance category:

Best Rock Performance:
Leonard Cohen – “You Want It Darker”
Chris Cornell – “The Promise”
Foo Fighters – “Run”
Kaelo – “No Good”
Nothing More – “Go To War”

I can't exactly tell what the difference is between Best Performance and Best Song, but in Best Rock Song, we got nominees like the aforementioned Metallica and Nothing More, as well as Foo Fighters and Avenged Sevenfold.

Best Rock Song:
Metallica – “Atlas, Rise!”
K.Flay – “Blood in the Cut”
Nothing More – “Go to War”
Foo Fighters – “Run”
Avenged Sevenfold – “The Stage”

Finally, the Best Rock Album category has been INFESTED with some heaviness as both Mastodon and Queens of the Stone Age join Metallica, Nothing More and The War On Drugs

Best Rock Album:
Mastodon – Emperor of Sand
Metallica – Hardwired…To Self-Destruct
Nothing More – The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Queens of the Stone Age – Villains
The War on Drugs – A Deeper Understanding

The show will broadcast live on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 on CBS. For the first time in a long time, the Grammys are moving from LA's Staples Center to Madison Square Garden in New York City.
