Rapper Lil Uzi Vert just released his new album Pink Tape featuring a cover of System Of A Down's "Chop Suey!" and reactions are mixed.
Frankly, I think the biggest problem with the cover is that it's not really a cover at all. Lil Uzi Vert's version sounds like it just took the actual original instrumental backing on Toxicity and just slapped some autotuned vocals overtop that don't quite fit. And it's not like a metal song can't be covered well by a hip hop artist – T-Pain fucking crushed Black Sabbath earlier this year. It's just that this one feels particularly lazy. Especially considering that the vocals just stop around the 2-minute mark and you're left with an instrumental for the next minute and a half.
Elsewhere, Pink Tape incorporates features from Bring Me The Horizon and Babymetal on the songs "Werewolf" and "The End", and they're both really good! So Lil Uzi Vert can clearly get with the metal world very well and incorporate heavier music in with what he does… so what the hell happened with this System Of A Down cover?
