The Grand Mal might have riffs for days and vocals to match, but for guitarist Ryan Cole and drummer Elliot Cole, it's a bit more personal. Cole says the band's name and the album title are both referential to his and Elliot's struggle with seizures.
“I think some things we are most proud of with this record is we have managed to write a heavy sounding record that is still melodic and accessible. A solid rock album as well as appealing to metal heads. It’s also pretty personal to Elliot and I, as we both suffer with Epilepsy (which is what a Grand Mal is) so along with the band name and the track ‘Synapse Transmission’ which delves into the harshness of grand mal seizures, we hope to have created a little bit of awareness about the condition.”
On a more metal note, The Grand Mal was recorded at Woodworm Studios, which used to be owned by Fairport Convention and is still used by Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath engineer Mike Exeter.
The Grand Mal is out October 18. Pre-order here from the band, and here and here from APF Records.
