Instead of posting a half dozen bite-size stories about the latest news from the doom/sludge underground, I decided to compile it all into one big nasty ball o'resin and load y'all up with enough album updates, tour dates, and general sludgefuckery to BLOW. YOUR. FUCKING. MINDS. Load up the bong, and read on…
Cult sludge act GRIEF have reunited and are currently plotting a European tour with the totally respectable crusty metallic hardcore (NOT metalcore) band TRAP THEM. They've also announced two East Coast shows, with plans for an equally-short West Coast run shortly thereafter.

The best band in the world, a.k.a. EYEHATEGOD, played a 20th anniversary show with CROWBAR in New Orleans this past weekend. The date was made even more special as it fell on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastation of the city, and came just as the threat of Hurricane Gustav loomed over the still-healing city. I made the pilgrimage down there to see the show, and goddamned if it wasn't one of the best I've ever seen. EYEHATEGOD played three new songs and announced that they are currently writing their next album. CROWBAR are also knee-deep in new tunes; their next record is expected to drop in 2009, with Kirk himself proclaiming that not only did they plan to tour, they "want to play every country that's got electricity!"
More doom news after the jump…

Up-and-coming doomed souls THOU will be providing support on a few dates, as well as several as-yet-to-be-announced guests (though I did hear rumors of EARTH playing the Philly date!).

Candlelight is ON THE FUCKING BALL lately when it comes to snapping up sick doom metal bands. Old-school stoner doomsters ORANGE GOBLIN recently signed to the label and are promising a follow-up to 2007's Healing Through Fire (Sanctuary).
Says Ben Ward, ""Orange Goblin is very proud to announce a new era for the band with the signing to world renowned metal label, Candlelight Records. . It’s an honor to be on such an esteemed label alongside bands that have inspired us since the bands inception. I believe that with the Candlelight team behind Orange Goblin, we can concentrate on writing the best material of our career and continue to tour as much as possible, hopefully reaching parts of the world that Orange Goblin is yet to plunder! We have already started writing new material for a release in 2009 and OG fans, in fact metal fans in general, are gonna love how the new stuff is sounding. It’s gonna be a huge combination of Sabbath-inspired doom, filthy biker blues and more of the familiar booze-ridden Goblin groove………Hold tight!”
TORCHE will be meandering through the Southwest next month, supported by CLOUDS and joined by BLACK COBRA and COLISEUM (select dates).

One of my favorite bands, psyched-out prairie rockers ACROSS TUNDRAS, have finished recording their latest album, Lonesome Wails from the Weeping Willow, and have also just announced an upcoming split 7" with the Neurosis-approved U.S. Christmas. You can stream Across Tundras' new record here.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, the new Zozobra record, Bird of Prey, is out now, and it RULES! Buy it immediately. Same goes for the new jams from ASCEND (featuring Greg Anderson & Gentry Densley), Ample Fire Within, and The Atlas Moth's Pray For Tides EP. This has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood sludgefuck.
