DEFTONES Frontman Confirms Stephen Carpenter Is Very Involved In New Album

They have about six or seven songs written.

We recently posted about Deftones either writing or recording a new album, and now frontman Chino Moreno has a bit to say about the process. Moreno confirms Deftones is indeed about six or seven songs deep into the writing process of a new album, which he says have "marked riffs, cool melodies and a lot of groove."

The following is from a Spanish-language interview transcribed and translated by The PRP.

"There are six or seven songs, which are still mutating. They are very powerful, and I am anxious because, as I told you before, it has been a collaborative process. I think all our albums were postcards of what we were going through at each moment. Either with Adrenaline, we were boys, with White Pony, we had matured a little, with Diamond Eyes or with which we are recording. Everyone has their own feeling, because it belongs to an era. Today we are older guys, I suppose, but we still enjoy making songs with marked riffs, cool melodies and a lot of groove. It is fun."

Moreno adds that guitarist Stephen Carpenter is way more involved in this album than 2016's Gore. Carpenter didn't really get involved in the writing process of Gore because he said he wasn't too into the direction of the album, but confirmed that he and the band were still on good terms. Shortly after Gore, Moreno said he wanted the next album to have way more riffs and grooves, and to include Carpenter more.

"We really want Stephen to have a strong role on all the albums, but in this case [Gore] it did not turn out the way we wanted. Most of his problems were not about Deftones, but about personal things. The best part is that now we are writing songs for the new album, and unlike Gore, it’s been a joint effort."

No word on if they're planning on getting the album out late 2018, or if we'll have to wait until 2019.
