Back in 2010, it looked like we were very very close to a true Sepultura reunion, until guitarist Andreas Kisser put the kebosh on it. Afterwards, there was a lot of mudslinging on both sides, and every few months, Max would come up and say something like he felt betrayed by Andreas while still holding out hope for a reunion.
Recently, drummer Iggor Cavalera was still holding out hope for a reunion, saying:
"I hope so, but there's nothing solid. The only solid thing right now, it's what I do with Max, and it's Cavalera Conspiracy. Like, the whole Sepultura thing, it's something that we don't know if it's gonna happen or not. To be honest, I really hope one day we can do this in a very cool way."
Of course, this led to Max being asked the same question shortly after by Andrew Huag:
"I was actually kind of surprised, 'cause I thought the topic kind of died out. I actually lost all kinds of hope for it. Honestly, today, I don't see it happening, just because of how our lives are and how those guys' [the other members of Sepultura's classic lineup] lives are; it's a pretty different world. We live in completely different worlds from those guys. And I think it's not the same. It won't be the same. The magic is gone. And I don't think a reunion would be the best thing for Sepultura. I honestly don't think it would. I kind of prefer [for] it to stay like this and leave the memory how it was."
He continued: "It was a great band [that] did great stuff. I'm proud of the records [I made with Sepultura]. And you can go to YouTube and check out all the old videos and how great it was, and kind of leave it like that. And then [we can] do other stuff — like Killer Be Killed and Cavalera Conspiracy and Soulfly — that we are plenty busy with.
[But] I was actually surprised [by] that comment [from] Igor, because I don't really see it happening myself, unfortunately."
Thank you, Max, for being the voice of reason on this one. As exciting as it sounds on paper, the truth is these guys haven't played together for 20 years now and it probably would never live up to expectations. Plus, Sepultura has evolved so much since then it would almost seem unnatural.
