DREAM THEATER's Next Album Might Have Eight String Guitars

In 1994, Dream Theater released its third album Awake, which was its first foray into extended range guitars. Now a full 23 years later, guitarist John Petrucci is seeking to experiment once more and dive into the world of eight string guitars!

In the past, Petrucci has voiced his love of Periphery and Animals As Leaders, so maybe we'll get some stuff like that on Dream Theater's non-conceptual 2018 album? Here's what Peutrucci had to say via an interview with Andertons.

In the same way back in 1994 when Awake came out, when I got that first seven string – literally in the studio, in front of the guys, "Hey check this out!" – we started writing, and that music came out of me playing that guitar; I want to approach the 8-string the same way.

So it's something we're developing now. There's no schedule. When it happens one day and I get it, I want to be in the studio, pick it up, start writing, see what happens, and not really think to much about it.

Well damn, if Petrucci can crank out some Awake-style riffs again, 2018 is going to rule! In the meantime, you ought to catch Dream Theater performing Images & Words in full live.
