If you miss old Avenged Sevenfold, good news! Vocalist M. Shadows wants to help fans moving forward create fake Avenged Sevenfold songs using artificial intelligence.
In a duet of tweet, the Avenged Sevenfold frontman said he'd love to help facilitate fans and producers capture and reproduce the band's sound using AI. Of course Shadows also touches on the idea of potentially getting some sort of royalties, because y'know – it's Avenged Sevenfold's sound.
"I like what Grimes is doing with her likeness and AI. I'm not sure the logistics while on a label… but moving forward I would love to help facilitate our 'sound' to producers and fans to create original Avenged Sevenfold songs using this technology.
"What should the splits be? Lots to figure out. Web3 will also play an important roll in authenticating true Avenged Sevenfold songs from AI produced. Exciting? Scary? What do you think?"
Shadows' approach to an AI version of Avenged Sevenfold is interesting because he's not outright saying for fans to go and rip the band off – dude wants a part of it. It almost feels like the equivalent of buying a plugin for a digital audio workstation (FL Studio, Pro Tools, etc.), in that you'd possess the sound of an "instrument" (or in this case, a band) that you can work with in your own way. Which is pretty cool, potentially?
Obviously there are loads of ways AI music can go wrong – like that fake Drake song that the artist didn't create or condone – but there might be useful and interesting ways the technology could be used to aid artists in creating. Personally, I'm still a little leery given all the ways that it can go wrong, but here's hoping the good prevails and AI music ushers in some cool new sounds that isn't ripping off or imitating artists without their consent.
