If you would 've asked me which state "rocks the most," or perhaps has the most rock, my instinct would be to say California. After all, it's huge, and it's also birthed quite a few prominent rock and metal bands. Or perhaps the largest state in the union, Texas. Plenty of rock there.
But turns out… the state that rocks the most is… uhh, is this correct? North Dakota?! This according to a new study by music service Slacker. How did they come to determine this?
Our fancy data scientists tirelessly agonized over our users’ listening behavior to determine the states that rock the hardest. Throw up those horns and check out our map to see if your state truly rocks.
Maybe because North Dakota has a very low population per capita, and are more likely to enjoy rock than other genres, their averages showed up higher on the list? This list does seem a bit flawed, California is among the least rocking states, which makes no sense to me. LA has 5 rock radio stations, NY has one. That has to count for something right?
Keep in mind this data is only from Slacker's own internal numbers. Perhaps there is a higher than average user base of Slacker in North Dakota? Who knows?
