It's no secret that the world is ready for a new System Of A Down record. It's been ten years since the band's last releases, a double album Hypnotize / Mesmerize. The band have been teasing the possibility of a new record in recent years.
Last year, drummer John Dolmayan was hopeful for new music within the year, but that never happened. Both he and bassist Shavo Odadjian are on-board it seems that frontman Serj Tankian is the hold out. A few months ago, Shavo even contemplated the band moving on without Serj although those comments were quickly retracted.
Basically, everybody was down except for frontman Serj Tankian, who had yet to comment on the matter. Until now!
In a new interview with RollingStone.com, Tankain was asked directly if there were plans for a new record and his response was reassuring:
There has been talk, and we are going to play this tour, come back and we're going to see where we are. If we have songs that work for System, if I have them and Daron [Malakian, guitar] has them. The openness is there to work together, but we haven't made any particular plans that we can announce.
This reads to me like they are testing the waters with this tour to see if they can still co-exist and get along. Committing to a new album would basically mean a two-year relationship commitment to the rest of the band between recording and touring and clearly they want to see if they'd be up for it first.
Tankian was also asked if he has anything written personally for the new System album and responded that he had a few that "could apply" but "I'm not sure until the time comes where I can actually play them for the guys and see if it's something that vibes off them."
Tankian ended the interview by reassuing fans that if they do begin writing a new album, the fans will be the first to know, before the press or anybody else.
