Turns out Look Outside Your Window isn't the only extra material Slipknot has sitting around. In an interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine, guitarist Jim Root revealed that the band wrote way too much material during the We Are Not Your Kind sessions. Root said the band had a hard time choosing what would ultimately make the record, and that the arrangements could appear sometime in the future.
"When I'm home — I don't have a wife or kids or anything like that — so I write music when I'm at home." said Root. "There's a lot of arrangements, there's a lot of things that we didn't have time to get to. There's a lot of stuff that is still out there from when we did We Are Not Your Kind lingering around. Does that make a record? I don't think so."
"It was really hard for us to pick the songs that ended up on this record. And it was really hard to slash some of the songs out and not put them on the record, so do those contribute to something that we could do in the future? Of course. If you're a painter, you're constantly painting."
Root added that the songs leftover just needed more time to develop.
"Some of them, it was as simple as it just needs more time to develop. Like, here's a heavy — this one's a barn-burner but the chorus just isn't developed yet or whatever it is. Or maybe Corey needs more time to work on this bit or that bit. It could be any number of things or literally we just did not have time to get to it because we had to prioritize this because you're under a time and a budget and all that."
As for the long-awaited and at this point possibly never surfacing Look Outside Your Window album, Root said only time will tell. All we know is that it's completely mixed and ready to go.
"We've been talking about putting it out since that happened and I don't know what will ever come of that, I don't know what will ever happen with that."
Look Outside Your Window was recorded during the 2008 sessions for All Hope Is Gone, and was written and performed by percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan, vocalist Corey Taylor, guitarist Jim Root, and DJ Sid Wilson.
Slipknot is currently working on a new album that Crahan has called "God music" and compared its sound to the band's 2001 album Iowa. Taylor has also chimed in about the new material, saying the new stuff has "made me start thinking outside my own box and challenging myself." The new album will likely be Slipknot's final effort for Roadrunner, and the band is hoping to have it out by the end of the year.
