Slipknot parted ways with founding drummer Joey Jordison in 2013. Slipknot said at the time the departure was for "personal reasons" while Jordison said he was blindsided by the decision and did not quit the band. Jordison sadly died in July 2021 at 46 years old, making Slipknot's 2008 album All Hope Is Gone his final effort with the band. In an interview with The Fader, Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor reveals the band intended to mend fences with Jordison and laments the loss of such a great talent.
"[The reality of Jordison's death] definitely crept in because it happened while we were working on some of [The End, So Far]. We dedicated the album to him. We hoped it wouldn't happen, and when it did it was a sad resolve that… For somebody that creative and explosive… I just wish we hadn't lost him this soon. We were hoping to mend fences with him, and it's one of those things that tells you: whatever you need to do, do it now, because you never know when you're gonna lose somebody."
Taylor later elaborated on losing bassist Paul Grey in 2010 to an overdose, saying both losses have really given the band a new perspective on appreciating one another.
"They definitely woke us up a little bit, made us realize we’re on the other side of youth. There’s gonna come a time when we start losing each other again, and we should take advantage of the time we have right now with each other. I’ve tried to let these guys know how I feel about them and the music we’ve made together. We’re all such different people, and the fact that after all these years we’re still doing it together — and still doing it at this pace — you have to embrace each other after that."
Slipknot has since been moving forward with bassist Alessandro Venturella and drummer Jay Weinberg, both of whom joined in 2014.
