At this stage of the game, it's damn near impossible to top the classics. While I'm a very, very big fan of new albums from bands like Vektor, Khemmis, and even Meshuggah, there's simply no way that those groups are going to top the classics.
So is it really shocking that Spotify's top streamed metal artist in 2016 is Metallica? Even going beyond the new album, think of Metallica's wide reaching fanbase. Everyone knows who Metallica is. The dude who love Darkthrone knows Metallica, your mom knows Metallica, and the guy with neon sticks blasting Skrillex has probably heard of Metallica.
