It might finally be time for a Mars Volta reunion! Rumors began swirling about three years ago that the band was in the studio recording their first new record since Noctourniquet in 2012. At the time, Cedric Bixler-Zavala tweeted in response to a fan asking about new material that the band was "in the kitchen finding new ways to through curve ball." A tweet made earlier that May also made mention of "[being] in the studio working on music w the Puerto Rican Bernie Sanders," which was pointed out is a moniker for Omar Rodríguez-López. Then last year we thought it was finally time after a mysterious teaser appeared online, but that turned out to be the band's 18xLP box set La Realidad De Los Sueños.
But now – NOW! – we've finally got something that might actually mean the return of The Mars Volta. The PRP picked up that The Mars Volta just updated a thumbnail of a playlist on their YouTube channel. The thumbnail notes the dates June 19 to 21 at the coordinates 34.0556n, 118.2457w, which point directly to Grand Park in Los Angeles, CA. So it anyone's in the area starting this Sunday, maybe head on over.
It's also worth noting that June 21 is the first day of summer, which in this context might mean absolutely nothing… or something? It's the friggin' Mars Volta, man. They work in mysterious ways.
