Nü-metal has been on the rise in a very big way over the past year. So much so that even Elton John chimed in about one of his favorite modern nü-metal bands. Though some folks who lived through the nü-era of the late '90s and early 2000s aren't thrilled that the genre is making a comeback.
In a series of tweets, Trivium bassist Paolo Gregoletto made his opinion on the genre pretty clear – nü-metal sucked back in the day and most of the bands outside the huge ones weren't great.
"Nu metal, as a whole, was a very very bad genre. Once you get past the first layer or two of big bands that survived it gets very grim. Anyone saying otherwise is a sicko."
He continued: "I think you could take pretty much any other genre of metal down to the local level and still be like yea that’s very good. Hell shit in the local scenes of 1999-2001"
I have a pretty hard disagreement on this one. Obviously the big bands of nü-metal were fantastic, but a good chunk of the smaller ones held up. Bands like (early) Spineshank and Nothingface are great examples of lesser-known groups that were excellent, and the genre certainly had its influence on the metal that followed – either in its own stylistic footsteps, or that bands were running away from it so hard they created something new.
And really can't this all be said about every genre? There really isn't any truly "bad" genre out there. For every good band within a style, there's a handful of shitty ripoffs and iffy quality.
