If you were wondering who played that insane flamenco piece named "Furia de Panteras" in Season 6, Episode 9 of Cobra Kai, wonder no more! It's guitar phenom Tim Henson of Polyphia fame. Henson revealed himself as the player behind the piece in a new YouTube video, where he predictably crushed it front to back.
On the performance, Henson briefly commented: "Guitars that I added for a track called 'Furia de Panteras' that's featured in S6 Ep9 of Netflix's Cobra Kai. Thank you to Zach Robinson and Leo Birenberg for having me!" I guess the revelation isn't too surprising in retrospect, considering how very in-line "Furia de Panteras" is with Henson's style.
If you're curious about how the music for Cobra Kai came together, Birenberg commented on it pretty extensively in a recently interview with Guitar World: "The process is pretty similar for each episode. We sit down with the showrunners and have a meeting – it's called a spotting session – and we'll watch episodes. We usually work on two at a time, so we watch them together and go through every scene with the editors and say, 'Should there be music here? What's the music going to be like?'
"And we just make a list: 'Okay, here we need some emotional stuff, here we have a big fight sequence, here we've got this, here we've got that.' Then Zach and I split off and start sketching things out. We'll go into our separate studios and start working.
"Once things are listenable and put together we start trading files, trading mixes and piling on ideas. A really good example would be [the composition] 'Strike First', which plays during a scene in Season 1, Episode 1, where Johnny beats up some kids in a mini-mart parking lot. In a lot of ways that was our thesis statement for the show."
