In 2016, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich joked that if Trump became President, he would consider moving to Denmark. At the time he said:
"I am a hundred percent Danish citizen. I pay taxes in the U.S.A., but I can't vote in America," Lars said at the time. "Yes, certainly sometimes I think about moving home to Denmark… If Trump becomes President and everything goes to shit, I might make my way to the airport and ask if I can get back in again."
Now, that we're approaching the end of Donald Trump's first term as president, interviewers aren't letting Lars live this down. In a new interview with U.K.'s Sky News, which you can see below, Lars was confronted on not making good on his promise, and the interviewer asked since he's still in the U.S. if he's a Trump supporter. Ulrich responded "I would say that that would be an exaggeration of the truth. First of all, I'm a Danish citizen, so I can't vote in the United States. Number two, I was just seeing if people were paying attention, which, obviously, they were four years ago, since this quote has come back to haunt me in, basically, every interview I've done in the last month. So, let's just leave it at that I'm a Danish citizen, I can't vote, but I am happy to live in the United States. And I think that's enough on that."
The reporter pressed Ulrich on who he would vote for if he were a U.S. citizen, and Ulrich responded coyly "I think people that know me well, and fans out there, can probably put two and two together."
Ulrich has been previously photographed at charity events with Bill & Hillary Clinton.
In 2017, Lars Ulrich was asked during the band’s Mexico City shows about Trump’s proposed border wall and Lars was clearly against it saying “”I don’t think the world needs any walls. I think we need to bring people together.” and previously joked that he would move to Denmark if Trump was elected.
That same year, frontman James Hetfield was less forthcoming with his opinion on Trump. When interviewed by Chilean newspaper La Tercera in 2017, he said “My opinion stays with me. I’m a singer and guitar player in a rock band,” he continued. “I hate politics. I don’t wanna talk about politics. It’s not important to me. What’s important to me is connecting people with music. Politics, religion… things that sep… they separate people. They make people…
“I love talking about it and my thoughts, but I think it gets in the way of people getting to understand all of you.”
Hetfield added: “I have no idea. I could probably sit down and like everyone on the planet, if you get to talk with them and understand them.
Kirk Hammett previously has gone off on Trump, saying “we need to defend democracy from those who want to crush it.”
