Quick Review: DESTROYER 666 Wildfire

Destroyer 666 have always pushed boundaries and broken rules with their own brand of distinctly ferocious blackened thrash metal. If you're an underground metal fan it's hard not to love a band like Destroyer 666, what with their overblown choruses, punchy riffs and truly epic sound. These Australians have always been a little bit out there, but now we are seeing them at their finest: five records into their career Wildfire proves that they are more unhinged than ever before.

I think what really gets me coming back to this album time after time are the same elements that have made me love Destroyer 666 for so long: the combination of gutsy choruses with the willingness to step back now and then and just make some beautiful music. The transition between "Hounds At Ya Back" and "Hymn To Dionysus" is a perfect example of all that I have ever loved about this band… we get a hard rockin' track with a sing a long chorus going straight into a powerful atmospheric black metal intro. Destroyer 666 are as twisted as ever, and with this release have improved on past triumphs.

Yet even in their most epic moments, Destroyer 666 remain dangerous and remind us of their essentially rock and roll roots. Wildfire is an album that encapsulates all of the bloodthirst and lust that has made us love Destroyer 666 for all these years, and whether they are doing a more chilled out epic or a punch-you-in-the-gut rager they are undeniably badass. So prepare yourself for a rip-roaring good time kids, because it's about to get rowdy.

Overall: 8.5/10
